There has been a recent surge of interest in women’s cricket but female cricket teams are by no means a new occurrence—an all-female cricket match was first recorded as early as 1745! The earliest record in Lapford is July 1910 when Lapford Ladies hosted a return match against Morchard Bishop Ladies.
The Elworthy sisters battled well for Lapford “their quickness between the wickets enabled them to score many runs which would otherwise have been lost”. Miss W Elworthy top scored with 22 but “the varied bowling of Miss Scotham turned the match in favour for Morchard”. Lapford lost by 16 runs.
The Lapford Ladies Cricket Team predates any nation organisation of women’s cricket. The Women’s Cricket Association was not founded until 1926.
